I was stuck in life before I became aware of how my thoughts affected how I felt. I was always unhappy and sad, as if bad things always happened to me. I had no idea why, and I had no idea what to do.
During my studies in Counselling and Psychology, I became interested in Cognitive Therapy, which encourages clients to become aware of their negative thought patterns. That’s when I began to pay attention to my own mental processes.
When I witnessed the mind, the thoughts seemed to come without my intervention. Suddenly, a negative thought would enter my mind, putting me down and criticising me, saying, “I’m not good enough.” Because it was in a “I statement,” I assumed it was true, which made me feel even worse about myself.
Through cognitive therapy practises, I realised that our thoughts are not true, but rather patterns derived from social constructs.
That’s when I began to observe my thoughts rather than engaging with them as truth, and I realised that thoughts did not create my reality – it was my belief in them that did. I was free to choose positive thoughts and directions once I stopped believing in the negative thoughts. I wasn’t trapped any longer!
Years later, I’m still actively involved in self-improvement through thought awareness, and I’m never stuck in life. It’s so liberating to have this skill!
